Best Pickleball Paddle for Beginners: How to Choose the Right One
One of the most common questions we hear from new players is: what's the best pickleball paddle for beginners? The good news is that you don't need an expensive paddle to start playing. But understanding the basics will help you make a smart choice when you're ready to buy your own.
Paddle Materials Explained
Pickleball paddles come in three main material types:
- Wood paddles — the most affordable and durable, but heavier. Good for absolute beginners or community programs, but most players upgrade quickly.
- Composite paddles — the most popular choice for beginners. They offer a good balance of weight, power, and control at a reasonable price.
- Graphite paddles — lighter and more responsive, offering better touch and control. Popular among intermediate and advanced players, but also a great choice for beginners who want quality from the start.
Paddle Weight
Paddle weight is one of the most important factors for beginners. Most paddles range from 7 to 9 ounces. A mid-weight paddle (around 7.5–8.2 ounces) is ideal for most beginners because it offers a good balance of power and control without being too heavy to maneuver. Lighter paddles offer more control but less power, while heavier paddles provide more power but can be harder on the arm.
Grip Size
Choosing the right grip size is important for comfort and injury prevention. A grip that's too small can cause you to grip too tightly, leading to wrist and elbow strain. A grip that's too large can make it difficult to control the paddle and change grips quickly. Most adult players use a grip circumference of 4 to 4.5 inches. When in doubt, choose a slightly smaller grip — you can always add an overgrip to make it larger.
Paddle Shape
Most beginner paddles have a standard shape, but there are variations:
- Standard shape — balanced sweet spot, good for beginners learning all-around skills.
- Elongated shape — more reach and power, but a smaller sweet spot. Better for experienced players.
- Widebody shape — larger sweet spot, more forgiving for beginners. A great choice for new players.
Our Recommendation for Beginners
For most beginners, we recommend a mid-weight composite paddle with a widebody shape and a standard grip size. This combination offers the best balance of forgiveness, control, and value. You don't need to spend more than $50–$100 on your first paddle. As you improve and develop your playing style, you can upgrade to a paddle that suits your specific game.
